Karbyk in the UK - See below... As mentioned in the news section at the time, shortly after the initial version of this site went live, we were contacted from Italy where a similar championship runs under the name Karbyk. In Italy, they do things a little differently, with only one driver (Pilot) per car and races around much shorter tracks lasting 20 - 30 minutes. The sport seems considerably better funded, with computer controlled lap counting able to time laps to a thousandth of a second. With such short races and lap times of typically only about 25 seconds, the racing is more frantic - if you thought a 14 second margin at Rugby in 1998 was close, how does 0.386 of a second grab you as the gap between first and second? The Karbyk cars are of uniform design and are produced commercially in race, road and rent specifications, having received approval as "street legal" by the Italian Minister for Transport, no less. The rental versions are sold for tourist areas where motor vehicles are banned - what a great idea! Prices run from around 1,000 pounds (sterling, exclusive of carriage) for the most basic race version to around 1,500 for a top spec road machine. More pictures from Italy are available in this website's Picture Gallery (Italy section, oddly enough) and you can find out more at www.karbyk.com. Karbyk in the UKThe Rugby 100-mile race on April 2nd 2000 saw the debut appearance of the Karbyk in the BPCC, with sole driver Andrea Romito putting in a very respectable performance, holding the leaders' pace for over two hours. Karbyk returned to the BPCC for the Leicester SuperSprints in 2001 with a team of three and promptly won on the short tight circuit by the smallest margin anyone had ever seen in an endurance event, making for one of the best racing spectacles of recent years. An early mechanical problem dropped Great Central 1 out of contention and the race came down to an awesome last lap sprint between Great Central 2 and the Karbyk team, which the Italians won by about five feet. The following year, 2002, saw the Karbyk squad return to Leicester with a full four-man team who, following some intesive and dedicated training, dominated the day's racing to take a clear and decisive win in the shorter event. The Karbyk team have also put us in contact with the French Pedal Car federation - who knows, this could herald the start of a European Championship! Need bike type stuff?
