Easter Weekend 2002
Good Friday, March 29th to Easter Monday, April 1st

pc1000

PC1000 information:

PC1000 was Great Central Racing's attempt to set a Guinness World Record for 1,000 miles in a pedal car. Great Central did not attempt this for some strange masochistic pleasure, but to raise £2,500 for the purchase of life-changing medical equipment for a team member; namely, an insulin pump for their diabetic team nutritionist.

The six-man team smashed their self-imposed 72-hour time limit for the attempt, averaging an impressive 15.96mph to complete the 1,000 miles in a time of 62 hours, 38 minutes and 26 seconds.

Starting at noon (GMT) on Good Friday, the six drivers worked a series of gruelling shifts, regardless of the weather conditions which included sub-zero temperatures through the Friday night, for the best part of three entire days. To put that into perspective, imagine racing the Swansea 24-hour race nearly three times over, back to back and without a break. Or pedalling from John O'Groats to Land's End, then when you got there, turning around and pedalling some more miles on top. Or racing an entire pedal car season in a weekend, then doing some more races on Monday.

See the race plan they used...

Sponsors:

Great Central Racing gratefully acknowledge the help and support of the following companies and organisations, without whom PC1000 would not have happened:

The Shenstone and District Car Club (www.curborough.co.uk) very kindly allowed PC1000 to use Curborough circuit for free, even going as far as cancelling a race meeting they would normally have held on Easter Saturday; PC1000 is very grateful for this.

Racelogic (www.racelogic.co.uk) lent PC1000 one of their hi-tech, GPS-based VBOX systems for the event for speed and distance measurement. The VBOX was successfully tested on the car during the February 25th test day at Curborough, producing some very interesting and useful data.

Travelodge, Burton-on-Trent (A38 Northbound) supplied two family rooms at reduced rate, plus gave complimentary continental breakfasts to those team members in the hotel at breakfast time.

HSS Hire Shops
HSS Hire shops supplied a assortment of equipment for the PC1000
record attempt, including three generators and an array of lighting equipment.

Phoenix Computers Phoenix (www.phoenix-comp.co.uk) is one of the UK's premier IT providers delivering a broad band of products and services to some of the UK's largest corporate, education and government organisations. Phoenix generously agreed to donate a Dell 17" PC monitor worth £200; this will be given away to one lucky private sponsor, in the prize draw to be held shortly and open to all those who sponsored at least 1p per mile (£10 total).
Miller Pattison Ltd Insulation specialists Miller Pattison kindly made a cash donation to PC1000
