Teams intro

Teams introduction | Starting a team | School and Scout teams

A pedal car racing team can consist of any number of drivers up to six (depending on age classification).

In addition to your driving crew, teams are permitted technical support staff, such as pit crew, catering staff, etc. Technical support staff should never be underrated - they can make a huge difference to your chances of success. In essence, all a driver does is drive the car until the end of his or her stint or until something breaks. Your support crew have to keep the car running smoothly, have all the spare parts and tools easily to hand, keep up morale, remind the next driver when it's their turn, fix anything that breaks and make the tea.

If that still sounds like an easy life, bear in mind that many top drivers do 30 minutes in the car at a time. This means Tech Support only see the car close up for maybe 20 seconds in every hour, when the drivers change over. In those two 10 second intervals, they will normally check all four tyres to see if any need replacing, oil the chain and check for any bodywork or chassis damage. Additionally, if they do find anything needing attention they will have to make a tactical decision on the spot as to whether to fix it now or leave it until the next stop. Getting it wrong can be very costly.

At the top of the responsibility tree is the team manager who may or may not be a driver also. Whoever the boss is, they have the final say with everything - the downside being when a planned tactic fails, it's their fault.
