What next for the SpokesFest Super Sprints?

People are still asking me if the Pedal Car racing will be returning next year, and in a city with so many festivals, carnivals and celebrations every year, that's no mean feat. Listen, the City Centre Manager doesn't travel down from Derby on a Saturday morning very often!

The Council, local media and even the likes of Marks and Spencer's are keen for it to happen again and plans are already underway for a circuit 25% longer. We've even been offered a small amount of sponsorship!

The racing this year was very close and some teams have quite rightly voiced concerns about safety and the width of the track in particular. I've had long conversations with Antony on the subject and we are looking at long term solutions for the circuit.

The obvious problem is the size of Humberstone Gate and restrictions put on us by the Emergency Services. But we face a dilemma: The media coverage, potential sponsorship and interest of the general public are a huge boost to the sport, the down side is that more teams want to race at SpokesFest. I guess you could say Leicester is a bit like the F1 teams going to Monaco. Well, a little bit anyway!

That's not to say safety isn't our primary concern, it is, and some difficult decisions will have to be made regarding the entry list for 2002, but please bear with us, organising city centre racing takes almost a year for each event and we're working on 2003 and beyond.

In the mean time lets have some great racing in 2002, not just at SpokesFest, and look forward to bigger and better things in the future. I've got the phone number for Mallory Park here!

Cheers for now,

Roger the Hilldodger
